When I woke up the next morning, the house was quiet and my head was throbbing. I got up and dressed in a pair of yoga pants and a sweatshirt before I shuffled over to Carly's room, hoping she was feeling better. I found her sound asleep with her daddy curled up behind her, cradling her to his chest. It was one of the sweetest things I’d ever seen. I didn't want to disturb them, so I went downstairs and made a pot of coffee, put together all the fixings for oatmeal, including cut-up dried cherries and a bowl of brown sugar. Then I set out the cinnamon and some chopped walnuts before heading out for my morning walk.

The sun was just barely cresting over the horizon as I slowly made my path along the fence line. Cowboys were already hard at work in the distance, rustling cattle and doing who knew what else. Dustin rode up alongside me, bringing his horse right next to the fence.

“Good morning, darlin’. How are you doing?”

“All right, Dusty. Had a rough night last night. Carly isn't feeling too well.”

“Oh, no. She need anything?”

“No, I think she's pretty tough. They were sleeping when I left.”

“Sure she is. She's a Langston.”

I smiled. “I think I better cancel our riding lesson tonight, if you don't mind. I don't want to leave her when she's not feeling good.”

“You know, this ain’t the first time you canceled on me, right?” His tone was teasing, but I still felt guilty.

“I’m sorry. I'm still adjusting to all of this. To being here.”

“Sure, I get it. It's fine. Does Hawk know you're planning to learn how to ride?”

“We haven't really talked about it.”

“Well, you should ask him, because I think there might be a little bit of an issue now that I've seen the two of you together. He might be wanting to teach you himself.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Look, I just . . . I don't want to get in the way of anything between you.”

“There can't be anything between us. I'm his employee.”

“If office romances never happened, half the people on this earth wouldn’t be married.”

I gulped. Married? “We’re not getting married, so there's nothing to worry about.”

“Well, as long as you say there's nothing going on. But I'm thinking we should maybe schedule lessons once a week from now on. Does that work for you? My heart can't take it if you keep standing me up.”

My cheeks heated. God, he was such a flirt. “Okay, that's fine. Do you want to just let me know what works for you?”

“Sure. How about Sundays?”

“Sunday works for me. I’m free as a bird.”

“Good. I'll see you at 10 a.m. in the arena.”

“Okay. I'm kind of nervous,” I admitted.

“You're gonna be fine. Horses are the most gentle and empathic animals on dry land. They feel what you feel. So if you're nervous, they'll know. But if you trust them, they'll know that too.”

“Do I need anything before I get started?”

“Well, if I
